Dementia Care Facility

Dementia Care Facility, Bruff, Co. Limerick

Dave Ryan Landscape Architect was involved from an early concept stage through to completion of Ireland’s first purpose built community for people living with dementia. The Masterplan was adjusted so that the outdoor spaces became embraced by the buildings and the central green space imagined as the heart and lungs of the development. The scheme was designed to encourage residents to have outdoor experiences, to stimulate conversation and offer activities in a safe and activating outdoor environment. Our goal was to create a landscape with therapeutic effect. A concept of private terrace gardens, shared back gardens and a central public garden evolved to fulfill the broad range of demands.

The design included: a sensory garden, a water feature, a farm enclosure, orchards, wildflower meadow, a Men’s shed, a Greenhouse and a Kitchen Garden with raised beds. To promote outdoor activities we proposed a boules court, seating areas and circular walks, and for inclement weather a covered walkways and a Tea House. A play area offered something for visiting children, making them feel welcome within the space, and swings were also imagined for elderly guests.
